Terms used in the Window Blind industry

As with most industries there are certain terms used that you may not be familiar with. This page has been designed to help you overcome this and explain in a little more detail what the terms / Jargon actually means.

  • Black Out
    Refers to fabric used in Vertical and Roller blinds to block out any daylight.

  • Bobble Chain
    A cord used on the bottom of a Vertical blind, which joins the slats together via the bottom weights.

  • Bottom Weight
    A plastic or wood insert fitted into a pocket at the bottom of a roller blind or Vertical blind to provide stability and rigidity. Linked together with a bobble chain. Weights come in two sizes; 89mm and 127mm.

  • Brackets
    Fittings used to hold blinds in position, attached to wall or window frame. Can sit on top, face or side of fitting.

  • Carriages
    Fittings at the top of a vertical blind, attaching the slats to the headrail.

  • Fabric Vertical Blinds
    Fabrics are translucent or opaque. Both can be made fire resistant if required.

  • Face Fix Brackets
    Used mainly in venetian and vertical blinds to attach the blind to the face of the window, for instance, in a conservatory, or on a wall when fitting blind to the outside of a window recess.

  • Hangers
    The long rectangular strip of treated fabric which hangs vertically to make up a vertical blind. Also known as Slats, Vanes, Louvre's or Material.

  • Headrail
    The straight rod along the top of a venetian or vertical blind to which the blind is attached.

  • Individual Replacement Vertical Blind
    Replacements of all parts or complete headrails can be obtained from most good manufacturers.

  • Louvre's
    The long rectangular strip of treated fabric which hangs vertically to make up a vertical blind. Also known as Slats, Vanes, Hangers or Material.

  • Material
    The long rectangular strip of treated fabric which hangs vertically to make up a vertical blind. Also known as Slats, Vanes, Hangers or Louvre's

  • Slats
    The long rectangular strip of treated fabric which hangs vertically to make up a vertical blind. Also known as Vanes, Louvre's, Hangers or Material.

  • Tilt Cord
    Situated at the control end of a vertical blind and used to draw open and pull shut the vertical slats. Usually a white plastic cord but can also be metal. Also called a Tilt Chain.

  • Tilt Chain
    Situated at the control end of a vertical blind and used to draw open and pull shut the vertical slats. Usually a white plastic cord but can also be metal. Also called a Tilt Cord.

  • Top Fix Brackets
    Bracket fittings used mainly on venetian and vertical blinds to fit the blind to the lintel or the ceiling.

  • Top Hangers
    Situated in a pocket at the top of the slats of a vertical blind and used to attach the slats and workings of the blind to the headrail.

  • Vanes
    The long rectangular strip of treated fabric which hangs vertically to make up a vertical blind. Also known as Slats, Louvre's, Hangers or Material. The slatting used in the manufacture of vertical blinds; the material can be both translucent and opaque; slats are also available in PVC, known as vinyl, and in wood.

  • Vertical Blind Replacement
    The slats (vanes), slat hangers, bottom weights and bottom link chain can all be obtained from all good blind manufacturers.

  • Wand
    A plastic rod hanging at control end of a vertical blind and used to tilt the vertical slats forward and backwards to open and close the blind. Also present on venetian blinds and used to open and close the horizontal slats.
