The overhanging curtains direct your valuable heat behind them, keeping the window nice and warm. Blinds on the other hand can be fitted inside the reveal leaving the windows out in the cold

I would say that blinds are preferable in the kitchen and bathroom where a certain ammount of steam is generated. Better still are blinds made of a wipeable fabric.

If you have a small room, you may find that chunky curtains make the room seem smaller than it actually is. Blinds fitted into the reveal on the other hand, can eliminate that. While still giving you your privacy.
